Entry checks: EES
The EU Entry/Exit System became fully operational on 10 April 2026. It digitally records entry and exit for eligible non-EU nationals visiting the Schengen area for short stays, including most British holidaymakers. Irish and other EU citizens are not registered in EES.
- Follow current official advice for your nationality and passport.
- EES is different from ETIAS; check the official EU website for ETIAS requirements before travelling.
- Allow time for border formalities and follow the instructions at the airport.
Identification and official checks
Keep suitable identification secure and use copies only where they are accepted. Do not hand a passport to an unofficial person as security.
- Check current identification requirements and the requirements of your activity or hire agreement.
- Store document photographs securely.
- Report a lost passport promptly.
Alcohol, smoking and public behaviour
Rules can differ by place and event. Follow signs, venue instructions and local enforcement rather than assuming rules from home apply.
- Respect residential areas and late-night noise restrictions.
- Check where smoking is permitted.
- Do not carry open drinks into places where they are prohibited.
Electric scooters and road use
Check current local rules, permitted riding areas, age requirements, helmet rules and whether the vehicle is authorised for public roads.
- Check the permitted route before riding.
- Never ride after drinking alcohol.
- Confirm insurance and liability before accepting a rental.
Common scams and pressure selling
Pause before paying, read the final amount and use official booking or contact channels when something feels rushed or unclear.
- Do not share banking codes or remote-access permissions.
- Check the currency before approving a card payment.
- Keep receipts and booking confirmations.
